The online auto loan calculator does not have a space for the entry of costs incurred upon the shipping of a purchased car. Yet depending on a car’s final destination, the cost for shipping that car might represent just “the tip of the iceberg.” In some countries, additional fees can add substantially to the amount that any car owner must pay to the government.

Suppose, for example, that a resident of Hong Kong has purchased a car in another country and has had it shipped to Hong Kong. Now that new car owner will need to have on hand, or have available, more money than the amount calculated by the auto loan calculator. That Hong Kong resident will need to pay an import return fee, an import declaration fee and registration tax.

Well before creation of the online auto calculator, one Iranian student in the United States chose to purchase a new car before returning home. He paid for that car to be shipped to Iran. Then he discovered that Iran was ready to charge him a hefty fee for importation of that car.

Fortunately, the young man’s younger brother appreciated the “under the table negotiations” that had become commonplace in the Iran of the 1960s and 1970s. The younger brother thus managed to “strike a deal” with the proper authorities.
